Barking Idiots
I blame the police force for caving in here. I believe in cultural sensitivity, but this is way too much. They should not have apologized, it only emboldens idiots to do more moronic things. (thanks to CozM for the link)
A POLICE force has apologised over concerns that an advertisement featuring a German shepherd pup could be offensive to the Islamic community.
As part of a campaign to publicise its new non-emergency telephone number, Tayside Police used a picture of a black puppy, Rebel, on postcards to be distributed throughout the east coast region.
However, following the intervention of Mohammed Asif, a Dundee councillor who warned police the image would "not be welcomed" by some communities, the force described the publicity drive as an "oversight".
...
Traditionally, dogs have been seen as impure, and the Islamic legal tradition has developed several injunctions that warn Muslims against most contact with them.
...
He added: "Trainee police dog Rebel has proved extremely popular with children and adults since being introduced to the public, aged six weeks, as Tayside Police's newest canine recruit."
He added: "We did not seek advice from the force's diversity adviser prior to publishing and distributing the postcards. That was an oversight and we apologise for any offence caused." [LINK

Well, it's good to see the councillor's views are not widely welcome, even by Muslims.
This really is an over-reaction by the police force. I can understand why they are so apprehensive. But, they should handle these things better. Because they give attention to one idiot, the entire community gets blamed.
In the UK, this has happened before. In one example, a school stopped production of The Three Little Pigs for fear of offending Muslims. But the Muslim parents said that no one ever asked them to, and no one was particularly offended.
this is really heights of stupidity by the police!
Interestingly similar thoughts in India might spell doom for the Vodafone TV ads because a pug dog is the main character in the ads.
well, technically this is debatable. I remember reading a hadith sometime ago about not being able to keep dogs in the house as pets/companions. Can be interpreted in many ways I guess. Similiarly i have read hadith about music, that some dude was playing a flute one day and the prophet covered his ears, which can be interpreted as music being haram in al-islam. To each his own, but the mullas should mind their own freakin business instead of acting as a society's moral conscience. I mean, don't they have better things to do? Like mend their beards (upper and lower), ensuring their shalwaars are above their ankles all the time etc, these rituals are pretty time consuming man.
